The story
In the 1920s Engadine, nineteen-year-old Lili is the daughter of a lawyer whose financial ruin threatens to send him to prison. Her mother urges Lili to seek help from Dorsday, an art dealer and friend of the family, hoping he will cover the debts. Dorsday offers to pay, but makes his assistance conditional on being allowed to look at Lili naked for fifteen minutes. Faced with this demand, Lili must weigh her own integrity against her family’s need and loyalty. The article does not describe what choice she makes or what follows.
