Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus "Gus" Waters, both battling cancer, meet at a support group in Indianapolis and fall in love. They bond over literature and decide to travel to Amsterdam to meet the reclusive author of a novel that resonates with Hazel's life. Upon arrival, they discover the author is a mean-spirited alcoholic, but they find solace in each other's company and visit the Anne Frank House. After returning home, Gus's health rapidly declines. He prepares for his death by arranging a 'pre-funeral' where he and his friend Isaac deliver eulogies. Gus dies shortly after.
