Full plot (contains spoilers)
Millie Calloway, a recently paroled woman, takes a job as a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchester family on Long Island. She soon discovers that Nina, the mother, is mentally unstable and being controlled by her husband, Andrew. After a clandestine affair between Millie and Andrew, the truth of their domestic life is revealed: Andrew has been abusing and imprisoning Nina in the attic for years. When Andrew eventually imprisons Millie in the attic and demands she self-harm, she retaliates by drugging him and locking him inside. The tension culminates in a violent confrontation where both women are attacked by Andrew. Ultimately, Millie kills Andrew, and Nina helps her cover up the crime as a 'freak accident.' The film ends with Nina and her daughter moving to California, while Millie takes a new job with a friend of Nina's who also suspects her husband is abusive.
