After escaping her abusive relationship with Adrian Griffin, Cecilia Kass hides with her friend James Lanier. While she is told Adrian committed suicide, she begins to notice signs of an invisible presence stalking her. She eventually discovers that Adrian used his optics expertise to become invisible and is still alive. After a series of escalating attacks, including the framing of her sister Emily for murder, Cecilia is sent to a psychiatric hospital. There, she learns she is pregnant and is pressured by Adrian's brother, Tom, to return to him. She eventually discovers that Tom was also a victim of Adrian's manipulations.
