Full plot (contains spoilers)
Following a mysterious storm, the Delgado family becomes trapped in their Seattle home by a water barrier. Over months of isolation, they establish a survival routine, including a garden and a water reclamation system. They learn that creatures roam the outside, and they must hide whenever it rains. After a neighbor is attacked by a creature, the family's isolation becomes absolute. Years pass as the children struggle with the pointlessness of their survival. Eventually, a creature enters their home, poisoning their supplies and injuring Ruth. Desperate, Jason and Ann prepare to escape through the floor. During a flood, they are forced into the attic where they encounter a creature. At their mercy, the creature opens the front door, allowing them to escape into a submerged Seattle. They eventually find other survivors via radio and set off on a boat to navigate the flooded world.
