Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1970s Arizona, a traveling knives salesman stops at a dry filling station in Yuma County. He learns of a $700,000 bank robbery and soon encounters the two robbers, Travis and Beau, in their getaway car. The robbers hold the salesman and a waitress, Charlotte, at gunpoint, demanding they act normally until a refueling truck arrives. However, the truck is actually overturned miles away. As an elderly couple, two aspiring criminals, and a local rancher arrive, a Mexican standoff ensues. Charlotte stabs Beau, sparking a shootout that kills everyone except the salesman and a young woman named Sybil, whom the salesman kills in self-defense. The salesman takes the loot and siphons fuel from the rancher's truck. He is then interrupted by a young couple with a baby; in a scuffle, he kills them both but accidentally shoots his own gas tank. He leaves the baby behind and flees. The sheriff, seeking vengeance for Charlotte's death, pursues him. The salesman, running out of gas near the wrecked truck, ignites a trail of gas, causing an explosion that kills the sheriff as the salesman escapes with the money.
