The story
On the Black Sea island of Carpathia, inhabitants have hunted primate-like creatures known as the Ochi for generations. A fanatical villager named Maxim leads a hunting party, forcing his daughter Yuri and adopted son Petro to join them. Maxim believes the Ochi are dangerous monsters responsible for driving away Yuri's mother. During a hunt, Yuri finds a baby Ochi caught in a trap. She secretly brings it home and discovers it is a sapient creature. Determined to return the baby to its family, Yuri runs away from home, while a conflicted Petro fails to stop her, leading Maxim to believe she has been abducted by the creatures.

On the Black Sea island of Carpathia, inhabitants have hunted primate-like creatures known as the Ochi for generations. Maxim, a fanatical villager, leads a hunting party including his daughter Yuri and adopted son Petro. After Yuri finds a baby Ochi in a trap and takes it home, she discovers it is sapient. She flees home to return the baby to its family, while Maxim hunts her, believing she was abducted. Yuri eventually meets her estranged mother, Dasha, who reveals she taught Yuri the Ochi's song-like language as a baby. Dasha explains she was bitten by an Ochi and Maxim cut off her hand to save her. Yuri reunites with the baby Ochi and they travel toward the Ochi's mountain caves. They are pursued by the hunters. Petro eventually stands up to his father. Maxim, unwilling to endanger others, swims into the caves alone and gets trapped. Yuri helps him, stunning him by speaking the Ochi language. Maxim shares a moment with the baby Ochi, and Yuri frees him. At the mountain home, the hunters aim from above, but Petro disarms one. Dasha uses flute music to calm the angered Ochi, who have discovered cave paintings of ancient humans using flutes. Yuri peacefully returns the baby to its mother as the Ochi celebrate.
