The story

In 1183 in the Angevin Empire, 50-year-old Henry II of England seeks to name a successor and summons his family for Christmas at his castle in Chinon, Touraine. Henry wants his youngest son, John, to inherit his throne, but his estranged wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, favors their eldest surviving son, Richard. The gathering includes the French king Philip II and Henry's mistress, Alais. The atmosphere is thick with political and personal tension as the family members navigate their conflicting loyalties and ambitions. Henry's attempt to secure the future of his kingdom triggers a series of maneuvers and confrontations among his children and allies, all vying for power and influence in the royal court.

In 1183, Henry II of England gathers his family at his castle in Chinon to decide on a successor. He favors his youngest son, John, while his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, supports their eldest, Richard. The plot involves complex maneuvers involving the French king Philip II and Henry's mistress, Alais. Richard's brother, Geoffrey, secretly plots with John to undermine Richard's claim. During a tense negotiation, Henry's plan to marry Alais to Richard is thwarted when Richard refuses the match. In a final confrontation, Henry realizes all his sons are unfit for the throne and imprisons them. He intends to seek a divorce from Eleanor to marry Alais, but she manages to get her sons released. When Henry confronts them, they refuse to kill him, and he ultimately relents, allowing them to escape. The film ends with Henry and Eleanor acknowledging their shared history and the continuation of their struggle.
