The story
In 1821, the masked swordsman Zorro defends the commoners of Alta California from Spanish oppression. When the corrupt governor Don Rafael Montero sets a trap for Zorro, the hero manages to thwart the execution of three peasants. However, a violent confrontation leads to the death of Zorro's wife and the kidnapping of his infant daughter by Montero. Years later, the original Zorro, Don Diego de la Vega, escapes from captivity and encounters Alejandro Murrieta, a man seeking his own revenge. The two men form an unlikely alliance, with de la Vega training Alejandro to become his successor as the masked hero while they work to reclaim the stolen land and the stolen daughter.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1821, the masked swordsman Zorro (Don Diego de la Vega) defends Alta California from Spanish oppression. During a confrontation with the corrupt governor Don Rafael Montero, de la Vega's wife is murdered, and his infant daughter, Elena, is kidnapped by Montero. In 1841, de la Vega escapes imprisonment and finds Alejandro Murrieta, a man seeking revenge against Montero's henchman, Captain Harrison Love. De la Vega takes Alejandro as his protégé, training him to become the new Zorro. As Alejandro assumes the mantle of Zorro, he infiltrates Montero's circle and falls in love with Elena, who believes she is Montero's daughter. The plot culminates in a raid on a slave-labor gold mine. De la Vega is captured by Montero, but manages to reveal his identity to Elena before being taken. In the final confrontation at the mine, Alejandro and de la Vega defeat Love and Montero. De la Vega dies in Elena's arms after passing the Zorro mantle to Alejandro. The film ends with Alejandro and Elena married with a son, and Alejandro continuing the legacy of Zorro.
