Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity must navigate the complexities of the Matrix to reach its Source and confront an impending machine invasion of Zion.
The story
Six months after escaping the Matrix, Neo and Trinity are now romantically involved. Morpheus receives an emergency message that an army of Sentinels is tunneling toward Zion and will reach it within 72 hours. To prepare for the defense, the Nebuchadnezzar enters the Matrix. Inside, Neo meets the Oracle's bodyguard and is guided to her. The Oracle instructs Neo to reach the Source of the Matrix with the help of the Keymaker. Meanwhile, a rogue program known as Agent Smith has escaped into the real world after possessing a crew member's body, creating a new threat to both the human resistance and the internal stability of the simulation.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Following the Oracle's guidance, Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity must navigate the Matrix to find the Keymaker, who is being held by the Merovingian. After a series of dangerous encounters and a high-speed chase, they reach the Source. There, Neo meets the Architect, who reveals that Neo is a central part of the Matrix's design. Neo is faced with a choice: reboot the Matrix and sacrifice the current population of Zion to ensure the system's survival, or save Trinity and allow the Matrix to crash. Neo chooses to save Trinity. In the real world, the Nebuchadnezzar is destroyed by Sentinels, but the crew escapes. Neo, sensing the machines, telepathically destroys them but falls into a coma. The film ends with the crew being rescued by the ship Hammer, where they find the Smith-possessed Bane also unconscious.
