Neo and Trinity are resurrected into a new version of the Matrix where they must navigate a complex reality to find their way back to each other.

The story

Set sixty years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, the film follows Neo, who lives a seemingly ordinary life as a video game developer struggling to distinguish fantasy from reality. While he works on a game based on his own memories, a group of rebels—aided by a programmed version of Morpheus—work to free him from a new version of the Matrix. Simultaneously, they must confront a new enemy that holds Trinity captive. As Neo awakens, he must navigate a world where his past and present collide, and his identity as 'The One' is challenged by the systems controlling the simulation.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In a new iteration of the Matrix, Neo (Thomas Anderson) is a game developer who struggles to separate reality from his dreams. He is joined by Trinity (Tiffany), who is unaware of her past. A rebel named Bugs and a programmed Morpheus work to extract Neo from the simulation. Upon awakening, Neo is taken to the city of Io, where he learns that sixty years have passed and his former allies are dead. He discovers that the current Matrix was designed by 'The Analyst' to exploit the energy of the 'One.' Amidst this, Agent Smith has been resurrected as a rogue program. Neo and Trinity eventually reunite within the Matrix, where they face off against the Analyst and the Merovingian. After a desperate escape through the streets of the Matrix, they are cornered on a skyscraper. They ultimately leap into the unknown, choosing to stay together and begin the process of dismantling the system to remake the Matrix.
