Full plot (contains spoilers)
Jonas Taylor is a rescue diver who attempts to save the crew of a damaged nuclear submarine as the hull is being rammed by an unidentified creature. He is forced to flee and leave two of his crew members trapped. Five years later, billionaire Jack Morris funds a mission to explore a deep section of the Mariana Trench. The team, including Dr. Minway Zhang and her daughter Suyin, is attacked and trapped by a large creature. They discover it is a Megalodon, a prehistoric shark. After a failed attempt to kill it with poison, a second, larger Meg emerges, killing several members. Morris is revealed to have lied about help, and the crew must face the beast alone. The creature eventually attacks a crowded beach in Sanya Bay, China. The crew lures it with whale sounds, and Jonas manages to wound it, leading to its death as it is devoured by a swarm of modern sharks.
