The story

The Namesake depicts the struggles of Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli, first-generation immigrants from the state of West Bengal to the United States, and their American-born children Gogol and Sonia. The story begins as Ashoke survives a train crash in India and eventually moves to the United States to study. After marrying Ashima, the couple settles in New York City. Their son, Gogol, grows up navigating the complexities of his dual heritage. The narrative follows Gogol's journey as he navigates his identity, his relationship with his parents, and his exploration of his Bengali roots while living in the United States.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film follows Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli, who move from West Bengal to New York City. Their son, Gogol, is named after the Russian author Nikolai Gogol due to a naming mishap. As Gogol grows up, he becomes a rebellious teenager who feels disconnected from his heritage until a trip to India sparks a change. He eventually legally changes his name to 'Nikhil' and pursues a career in architecture. He enters a relationship with Maxine, a white American woman, which creates tension with his parents regarding cultural differences. After Ashoke dies of a heart attack, Gogol struggles with grief and tries to reconnect with his roots. He briefly marries Moushumi, but the marriage fails due to her infidelity. Following the divorce, Gogol finds solace in his father's books and begins to truly appreciate his Indian culture. The film concludes with Ashima deciding to split her time between New York and Kolkata.
