Full plot (contains spoilers)
Annie Braddock, a recent graduate, is hired by Mrs. X to be a live-in nanny for her son, Grayer. Annie keeps her true employment a secret from her mother, Judy. While working, Annie develops a bond with Grayer and begins a romance with a neighbor she calls "Harvard Hottie." She eventually discovers that the wealthy couple, the Xs, are deeply dysfunctional; Mr. X is abusive and unfaithful, while Mrs. X is neglected. During a trip to Nantucket, the truth of the family's dynamic is exposed. After being fired by Mrs. X following a confrontation involving a "nanny cam" and an assault by Mr. X, Annie records her feelings and plays them at a school meeting, exposing the truth to the community. This leads to a reckoning for Mrs. X. Ultimately, Annie reconciles with her mother, continues her relationship with Hayden, and pursues her interest in anthropology. Months later, she receives a letter from Mrs. X, who is now a single mother, thanking her for changing her life.
