The story
In the present day, an elderly man named Duke reads a romantic story from a notebook to a female patient in their nursing home. The narrative shifts back to 1940 at a carnival in Seabrook Island, South Carolina, where a lumber mill worker named Noah Calhoun falls in love with an heiress, Allison "Allie" Hamilton. Despite their different social standings, the two begin a passionate romance. However, the conflict arises when Allie's mother, who disapproves of Noah's working-class background, forbids the relationship, forcing the couple to navigate the pressures of family expectations and the looming reality of the war.

In the present day, Duke reads a story from a notebook to a woman in a nursing home. The story recounts the lives of Noah and Allie, who fell in love in 1940s South Carolina. Their romance is tested by Allie's wealthy parents, who force her to break off the relationship. Years later, during World War II, Noah serves in the military while Allie becomes engaged to a wealthy man, Lon Hammond Jr. After the war, Noah settles into a life of solitude until Allie sees his face in a newspaper and travels to find him. They rekindle their romance and eventually choose to be together. In the present, it is revealed that the woman is Allie, suffering from dementia, and Duke is Noah, who reads her the notebook to help her remember their life together. They share a final moment of clarity before her memory fades. They eventually pass away in each other's arms.
