Full plot (contains spoilers)
After the murder of coach Yves Gluant and the theft of the Pink Panther diamond, Clouseur is promoted to inspector to serve as a public distraction for Dreyfus's secret investigation. Clouseau eventually discovers that several people had motives to kill Gluant. After a series of mishaps, including a misunderstanding involving a suitcase of weapons and a public humiliation, Clouseau realizes that the primary suspect, a Chinese envoy, is not the killer. He discovers that the real culprit is Yuri, a jealous Russian trainer who killed both Gluant and a teammate, Bizu. Clouseau eventually finds the diamond hidden in the purse of the pop star Xania. In the end, Clouseau is awarded the Légion d'honneur, while Dreyfus is left humiliated by a series of comedic mishaps.
