A fur trapper must survive a grueling journey through the wilderness after being mauled by a bear and abandoned by his companions.

The story

In 1823, during the Arikara War, fur trapper Hugh Glass leads a group of trappers through the territory of the present-day Dakotas. While scouting for game, Glass is mauled by a grizzly bear and left for dead by his companions who fear an impending attack from an Arikara war party. Left for dead in the wilderness, Glass must endure a grueling physical and psychological journey to survive. He finds himself alone in the harsh landscape, forced to navigate the elements and the dangers of the frontier while attempting to reach safety and find a way to survive the injuries inflicted by the bear.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1823, fur trapper Hugh Glass leads a group of trappers through the Dakotas. During a hunt, they are attacked by an Arikara war party. After the survivors retreat, Glass is mauled by a grizzly bear. His companions, led by John Fitzgerald, leave him for dead, with only his son Hawk and Jim Bridger staying behind. Fitzgerald eventually abandons both, leaving Glass buried in a makeshift grave. Glass survives and begins a desperate trek through the wilderness, encountering a Pawnee man named Hikuc and later a group of French Canadian hunters. He eventually finds the others and discovers that Fitzgerald has betrayed them. In a final confrontation, Glass faces Fitzgerald and eventually pushes him into the hands of the Arikara. The film concludes with Glass retreating into the mountains, where he is visited by his wife's spirit.
