A mother must fight to save her son from a malevolent spirit that manifests through a cursed videotape.
The story
Six months after the first film, Samara Morgan's cursed videotape continues to circulate through Astoria, Oregon. Jake Pierce, who is on his seventh day after watching the tape, tricks a schoolmate named Emily into viewing it. While Emily watches, Jake is murdered by Samara. Meanwhile, Rachel Keller and her 9-year-old son, Aidan, move to Astoria. Rachel, a journalist, learns of Jake's death and discovers Samara is seeking her. After Rachel burns the cursed tape, Aidan begins experiencing terrifying nightmares and physical symptoms, leading Rachel to fear that the spirit is possessing her child.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After Jake Pierce is murdered by Samara for tricking Emily into watching the cursed tape, Rachel Keller and her son Aidan move to Astoria. Rachel discovers Samara is hunting her and burns the tape, but Aidan begins showing signs of possession, including hypothermia and bruises. After a series of terrifying events—including Aidan developing aquaphobia and Samara appearing in his reflections—Rachel is sent away by a psychiatrist who suspects child abuse. Rachel returns to Moesko Island and learns about Samara's biological mother, Evelyn. In a hospital, a possessed Aidan kills Dr. Temple. Rachel eventually discovers Max Rourke's body and realizes Aidan is acting suspiciously. She dreams that she must exorcise Samara and proceeds to drug the spirit, placing it in a bath to temporarily free Aidan. Samara appears on the television, and Rachel is pulled into a monochromatic world. At the bottom of a well, Rachel scales the walls, escapes, and pushes the lid shut, locking Samara out. She then wanders to a cliff where Samara's adoptive mother committed suicide, falls into the water, and returns to the real world to reunite with Aidan.
