In 1998, Ron Clark leaves North Carolina for New York City and takes a job at an elementary school in inner Harlem. He faces immediate challenges with a group of disruptive sixth-grade students who are often ignored by the system. After a moment of frustration leads him to consider resigning, a former colleague encourages him to stay. Clark begins to win over the students by incorporating their interests into his teaching, such as rapping about the Revolutionary War.
