Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ingrid, a successful author, learns that her old friend Martha has terminal cancer. They meet at a Manhattan hospital where Martha recounts her life story, including her past with Fred, a Vietnam War veteran who died under mysterious circumstances, and the resulting estrangement from her daughter, Michelle. Martha reveals she has bought euthanasia pills to end her life. Ingrid agrees to accompany her to a rented country house in Woodstock, New York. During their stay, a series of unsettling events occur, including a door closing that Martha claims was a 'practice run' for her death. Ingrid later meets with a former shared lover, Damian, who helps arrange legal defense for her. After Martha dies on a lounge chair, Ingrid finds a note asking her to contact Michelle. Following an interrogation by a religious fundamentalist officer, Ingrid invites Michelle to the house, where they lie together outside in the snow.
