A group of young baseball players in 1962 must navigate the challenges of the game and the mystery of a fearsome dog known as "the Beast."

The story

In 1962, Scott "Scotty" Smalls moves to the San Fernando Valley and joins a group of eight boys who play baseball daily at a local sandlot. The team is led by the talented Benjamin Franklin "Benny" Rodriguez. After Smalls joins, the boys are warned about "the Beast," a large and fearsome dog living behind a nearby fence that has claimed many baseballs over the years. The story follows the boys as they navigate their friendship, their skills on the field, and the looming threat of the beast while trying to maintain their secret sanctuary.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1962, Scott "Scotty" Smalls moves to the San Fernando Valley and joins a team of eight boys who play at a local sandlot. The team includes characters like the sturdy Ham, the smart-aleck Yeah-Yeah, and the fearful Squints. After a ball lands in a neighbor's yard, the boys warn Smalls about "the Beast," a monstrous-looking Mastiff. The plot follows their adventures, including a trip to a pool where Squints fakes a drowning to get a kiss from lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn, and a victory over a rival Little League team. The conflict peaks when a ball is hit into Mr. Mertle's yard; the boys discover it is a rare ball autographed by Babe Ruth. They forge a signature on a new ball while trying to retrieve the original. After a tense standoff, Benny faces the Beast, who is revealed to be a normal-sized dog. They find Mr. Mertle, a blind former player, who gives them a rare 'Murderers' Row' ball. The film ends with a montage of the boys as adults, showing their lives progressed from 1962 to the present day.
