The story

Scott Calvin, a divorced marketing executive and father, wants his son Charlie to believe in the magic of Santa Claus. On Christmas Eve, a confrontation on their roof leads to a tragic accident where Santa Claus falls and is presumed dead. Scott finds himself in a predicament when he discovers a contract stating that anyone who puts on Santa's suit must assume his duties. To keep the secret from his ex-wife and ensure his son's happiness, Scott must navigate the complexities of his new role as the official Santa Claus while trying to maintain a normal life in the months leading up to the next holiday.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After becoming the new Santa Claus, Scott Calvin must manage his physical transformation—including a white beard and weight gain—while keeping his identity a secret from his ex-wife, Laura, and her husband, Neil. He faces challenges at his workplace and during community events. On Thanksgiving, a conflict arises when Laura and Neil believe Scott is hiding the truth from Charlie. Scott uses a magical snow globe to prove his identity to his son. On Christmas Eve, Scott is briefly arrested but is rescued by elves. He eventually convinces Laura and Neil of his true identity through a heartfelt speech. The film ends with Scott and Charlie delivering gifts together, and Scott's identity is confirmed to the public by his magical takeoff from a roof.
