SpongeBob learns of Gary's kidnapping from Patrick and sets off on a journey to Atlantic City. They are joined by Otto, a robot built by Sandy, who takes them to an old Western town. In Bikini Bottom, Plankton plans to steal the Krabby Patty formula, but King Poseidon in Atlantic City needs a new snail's slime for his appearance. Plankton kidnaps Gary to keep SpongeBob away from the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob and Patrick travel to Atlantic City with Otto, a robot, and meet Sage, a tumbleweed spirit. They enter a dream world where they free ghostly pirates from the spirit El Diablo. Upon reaching Atlantic City, they are imprisoned in Poseidon's dungeon. Back home, Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Sandy, and a repentant Plankton team up to rescue them. In prison, Sage reveals that bravery comes from within. Before their execution, the group performs a musical number to distract Poseidon. SpongeBob refuses to leave Gary behind, eventually befriending Poseidon by offering him friendship.
