A group of researchers in Antarctica must confront a shape-shifting extraterrestrial life-form that mimics any organism it consumes.
The story
In the frozen wasteland of Antarctica, a group of American researchers discovers a mysterious, malformed humanoid following a fatal encounter with a Norwegian helicopter. As they bring the remains to their station, they realize the entity is not a simple corpse but a highly adaptive extraterrestrial life-form capable of mimicking any organism it touches. The discovery plunges the team into a state of extreme paranoia and conflict, as they must determine who among them is still human and who has been replaced by the 'Thing'. With the environment isolating them from the outside world, the survivors must navigate the growing suspicion that their colleagues are no longer who they appear to be.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After a Norwegian helicopter crashes nearby, American researchers find a malformed humanoid and bring it to their base. The organism, known as the 'Thing', begins to assimilate and mimic the crew and their animals. The team discovers a massive excavation site containing an ancient alien spacecraft. As the infection spreads, the group becomes increasingly paranoid, eventually leading to a breakdown in trust and leadership. MacReady takes command and implements a blood-testing protocol to identify the infected. Several members are revealed to be host organisms and are destroyed by the others. In the final confrontation, the team realizes the Thing intends to hibernate until rescued. They decide to destroy the station with explosives. In the aftermath, the final survivors sit together in the snow, sharing a drink while waiting for the end.
