A man's entire life is revealed to be a reality television show filmed on a massive soundstage.

The story

Truman Burbank is the unsuspecting star of The Truman Show, a reality television program filmed and broadcast worldwide, 24/7, through hidden cameras. His hometown, Seahaven Island, is set inside an enormous soundstage in Los Angeles, where the show's creator, Christof, controls nearly all aspects of Truman's life. To keep him from discovering the truth, the production uses a cast of actors and crew members who serve as his community. While the producers intend for Truman to fall in love and marry a woman named Meryl, he begins to develop feelings for an extra named Sylvia, who attempts to tell him the truth about his fabricated existence.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Truman Burbank is the unwitting star of a 24/7 reality show where his entire life, and the town of Seahaven, are staged on a massive soundstage. Controlled by producer Christof, Truman's world is populated by actors and crew members. While the producers push him toward a marriage with Meryl, Truman falls for an extra, Sylvia, who tries to warn him of the truth. As the show's 30th anniversary approaches, Truman notices inconsistencies—a falling light, a localized rainstorm, and his 'father' appearing briefly. These clues lead him to question his reality. During an attempted escape, he faces various obstacles before eventually reaching the edge of the set. He confronts Meryl and eventually faces Christof, who admits the truth and tries to convince him to stay in his artificial world. Truman delivers his catchphrase and walks through an exit door into the real world, while the audience's initial excitement quickly fades into boredom.
