Full plot (contains spoilers)
Henry Broadway travels to Trinity, Montana, to avenge his father Isaac, who was hanged for allegedly stealing gold during the Civil War. Henry meets Sheriff Gabriel Dove, who reveals that the town views Isaac as a villain. Henry becomes involved in a violent altercation over a prostitute, Julia, and encounters St. Christopher, an ex-slave and former partner of Isaac who seeks his share of the stolen gold. Christopher hires a stage actor, Jacob, to extract a confession from Isaac, but Jacob takes Henry hostage. With help from Christopher and a woman named Running Cub, Gabriel and Henry defeat Jacob's men. The hunt for the gold intensifies as a posse seeks Running Cub. Gabriel eventually reveals he killed the previous sheriff, Butler, to save a child. A massive shootout occurs, resulting in the death of the posse's leader and the injury of Running Cub. Gabriel and Running Cub flee to Gabriel's home, where they are attacked by a mob led by Gideon and Christopher. During the siege, Henry is captured and tortured but freed by a sister. Christopher eventually kills the town preacher and barman, believing the gold is under the church. Henry and Gabriel confront him; Christopher shoots them both but is killed by Gabriel. In the aftermath, Henry chooses to let Gabriel keep the house and is offered a deputy badge.
