Full plot (contains spoilers)
Harold Fry, a man living a routine life in Devon, decides to walk 500 miles to Berwick-upon-Tweed to reach a dying former colleague, Queenie Hennessy. His wife, Maureen, initially opposes the plan, fearing he is abandoning their marriage. As Harold walks, he faces physical hardships and mental struggles, including hallucinations of his son, David, who died by suicide. His journey gains public attention, and he is joined by a group of 'Pilgrims' who follow him. Amidst the growing crowd, Harold deals with the complexities of his past. He eventually learns from Maureen that she had withheld a vital message from Queenie years ago regarding the circumstances of David's death. This revelation clarifies that Queenie had once protected him from self-blame. Upon reaching Berwick, Harold finds Queenie in her final days. He realizes that his journey was not just about reaching her, but about confronting his own guilt and finding redemption. The film concludes with a sense of peace as the impact of his journey on others is shown through shared moments of reflection.
