The story
Following the Soviet invasion of Poland in World War II, Polish officer Janusz Wieszczek is imprisoned in a Siberian Gulag. Alongside a diverse group of fellow prisoners, including an American engineer and a Russian actor, Janusz joins a desperate attempt to escape the camp during a severe snowstorm. They must navigate treacherous terrain, extreme weather, and the physical toll of exhaustion as they seek freedom from the Soviet regime, facing life-threatening conditions as they move toward the Gobi Desert and beyond.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After being imprisoned in a Siberian Gulag during WWII, Janusz Wieszczek and a group of fellow prisoners escape during a snowstorm. They are joined by a Polish girl, Irena, and travel toward Mongolia. After realizing Mongolia is under communist control, they head toward India through the Gobi Desert. The journey is grueling; several members die from exposure or dehydration. They eventually reach the Himalayas, where they are aided by a Tibetan monk. The group splits: some reach India and are repatriated, while others find different paths to safety. Janusz eventually walks around the world and is reunited with his wife in 1989.
