The story
One night, a young man runs in front of medical examiner Theresa Wolff’s car. She attends to him; apparently uninjured, he gives her his phone number and leaves. The next morning, Theresa is called to examine a possible suicide and recognizes the dead man as Gabor, a clarinetist with the Jena Philharmonic. Because she did not report the traffic accident involving personal injury, special investigator Brackhus removes her from the investigation and takes it on with Lewandowski. As the autopsy proceeds, evidence of a physical altercation between Gabor and conductor Viktor Radenko emerges. Doubting that Gabor died by suicide, Theresa pursues her own inquiries despite her suspension.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
One night, a young man runs in front of Theresa Wolff’s car, and she immediately attends to him. He appears to have no serious injuries and gives her his phone number before saying goodbye. The next morning, when the medical examiner is called to a possible suicide, she recognizes the dead man as the person she encountered the previous night. He is Gabor, a musician who played clarinet in the Jena Philharmonic and is believed to have jumped to his death. Since Theresa failed to report the traffic accident involving personal injury and is compromised, special investigator Brackhus removes her from the case and investigates it with Lewandowski instead. Dr. Zeidler conducts the autopsy. It emerges that Gabor had a physical altercation with the conductor, Viktor Radenko. Radenko had demanded a great deal from his musicians and was having a relationship with Maja, who used to play music with Gabor. Doubting that it was suicide, Theresa conducts her own investigation and discovers that a female member of the Philharmonic had once taken her own life under Radenko’s leadership. She also learns from Lorenzo, a friend of Gabor’s, about Gabor’s musical ambitions. Despite Theresa’s suspension, Zeidler consults her, and the two find evidence that Gabor was already dead before he fell and that the injury to his upper lip came from Radenko. When Theresa visits Lorenzo again, it emerges that he, too, had argued with Gabor. The dispute was about how Lorenzo and Gabor had been forced to help their conductor cover up a fatal hit-and-run. After the accident involving Theresa, Gabor threatened in front of Lorenzo and Maja to report Radenko, and the three got into a fight. Gabor hit the wall and suffered fatal injuries. They then pushed his body down into the depths. Radenko is arrested for the hit-and-run and the subsequent cover-up. In the end, Brackhus leaves it to Lewandowski to decide whether or not to report Theresa’s conduct.
