Four siblings are forced to share a roof for seven days following their father's death.

The story

After discovering his wife's affair and the death of his father, New York radio producer Judd Altman returns to his childhood home in upstate New York. He finds himself forced to live under the same roof as his three siblings, their spouses, and other acquaintances for seven days to observe a shiva. Amidst the mourning, the siblings must navigate their complicated relationships and the presence of their over-sharing mother, while Judd deals with the fallout of his crumbling marriage and the complexities of his family's dynamic during this period of transition.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Judd Altman discovers his wife Quinn is having an affair with his boss, Wade Beaufort. Following his father Mort's death, Judd returns to upstate New York for the funeral. He reunites with his siblings: Wendy, who is struggling with her workaholic husband; Paul, who is trying to conceive with his wife Annie; and the youngest, Phillip, who is dating a therapist named Tracy. Their mother, Hilary, insists they stay together for seven days for the shiva. During this time, Judd hides his knowledge of the affair from most, while the family deals with internal conflicts, including a fight over their father's business and various romantic entanglements. Quinn eventually reveals she is pregnant with Judd's child. After a confrontation with Wade, Judd decides to stay with Quinn despite the divorce. The climax occurs when Hilary reveals her long-term relationship with their neighbor Linda. After a moment of clarity, Judd reconciles with his past and his feelings for his old friend Penny, while the other siblings find resolution in their respective relationships. Judd ultimately leaves for Maine to pursue a long-held dream.
