A harrowing depiction of the medical, economic, and social consequences of a nuclear war in Britain.

The story

In the English city of Sheffield, Ruth Beckett and Jimmy Kemp, two young adults, plan to marry after learning of Ruth's unplanned pregnancy. Their lives are upended when an international crisis involving the Soviet Union and the United States escalates into a full-scale nuclear exchange between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. As the conflict unfolds, the local community faces the immediate consequences of a nuclear strike. The film follows the breakdown of social order, the implementation of emergency measures, and the desperate attempts of residents to survive in the aftermath of a devastating nuclear winter.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Following a nuclear exchange between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, the city of Sheffield is devastated. Ruth Beckett and Jimmy Kemp are forced to navigate a collapsing society. After a local strike, Jimmy is separated from Ruth and presumed lost. Ruth survives in a cellar while her grandmother falls ill. As the government collapses and martial law is declared, Ruth flees her home to find safety in the countryside. She eventually gives birth to a daughter, Jane, in an abandoned barn. A decade later, the population has dwindled to a medieval level, and the country is ravaged by nuclear winter and radiation. Ruth dies of complications from age and cataracts, leaving Jane to survive in a world where food is the only currency and many survivors suffer from mutism and physical deformities. The film concludes years later with Jane giving birth to a child in a makeshift hospital, highlighting the cycle of survival in a broken world.
