The story
Ángel arrives in a wine-growing region to fumigate the cochineal infestation that gives the wine an earthy taste. He sees himself as divided between opposing states—half man and half angel, half alive and half dead—and believes a voice from the cosmos governs his consciousness. As he takes on the task of ending the infestation, two very different women draw out contrasting aspects of his personality: one is young, brazen, and single; the other is shy and married. Their presence awakens both his passionate and romantic sides.

A man named Ángel considers himself half man, half angel, half alive, half dead, and believes that his consciousness is governed by a voice speaking to him from the cosmos. He arrives in a region with the job of fumigating and thus putting an end to the cochineal infestation that gives the wine an earthy taste. Two very different women—one young, brazen, and single, the other shy and married—awaken his instincts in such a way that each responds to the two sides of his complex personality: the passionate and the romantic.
