The story
Jean Dubois d'Ombelles, an upper-class young poet, is called up for military service alongside his valet, Joseph Turlot. In the barracks, Jean faces hazing from his fellow soldiers, while Joseph innocently causes one scandal after another.

Jean Dubois d'Ombelles, a young upper-class man and poet, is called up for military service at the same time as his valet, Joseph Turlot. The poet is subjected to hazing by his barrack-room mates while the valet innocently causes one scandal after another. Tired of putting up with the situation, the poet adopts a persona capable of commanding respect and, at a breakneck pace, turns everything upside down.
