An immigrant teacher takes on a class of unruly students in East End London, choosing to treat them with the respect of adults.

The story

In June 1966, Mark Thackeray, an immigrant from British Guiana, accepts an interim teaching post at North Quay Secondary School in the East End of London despite having no prior experience. He inherits a class of unruly pupils who have been rejected from other schools and are known for vandalism and distasteful pranks. After a series of disruptive incidents, Thackeray decides to change his approach, declaring that he will treat the students as adults and expect them to behave as such. He establishes new rules of mutual respect, gradually winning over the class except for one persistent troublemaker.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Mark Thackeray, an immigrant from British Guiana, takes an interim teaching job at North Quay Secondary School in London's East End. The students are unruly, engaging in vandalism and pranks. After losing his temper over a girl's sanitary towel being burned, Thackeray decides to treat the students as adults, requiring them to address him as 'Sir' and allowing them to discuss any issue. He organizes trips to museums and gradually earns the students' respect, though he faces challenges including a violent confrontation between a student and the gym teacher, and a refusal from the class to accept his donation for a wreath. The headmaster eventually tells him the 'adult approach' has failed and cancels future outings, offering him an engineering job instead. During a boxing match with the troublemaker Denham, Thackeray wins respect by handling the bout with dignity. He is eventually invited to the class dance and, after the term ends, receives a silver tankard from the students. Despite receiving an engineering job offer, Thackeray rips up the offer, choosing to stay with his students.
