A Hamburg inspector’s family holiday on Amrum turns into a personal crisis when an anonymous threat follows him there.

The story

Inspector Rolf Spiekermann is highly successful in Hamburg’s criminal underworld, but that success has earned him enemies and strained his family life. Hoping to ease the tension, his family plans a vacation on Amrum. Soon after arriving, Rolf is attacked and injured, though a young hitchhiker helps prevent worse harm. Rolf suspects the assault may be revenge by Pjontek, a criminal he sent to prison. The hitchhiker, Olaf, pitches his tent on the family’s property and quickly draws the attention of Rolf’s family, while the inspector grows increasingly unsettled by a threat he cannot identify.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The highly skilled Inspector Rolf Spiekermann, whose success in Hamburg’s criminal underworld has earned him enemies, struggles with the tension between his career and family life. To ease that strain, his family plans a vacation together on Amrum. Once there, Rolf is injured in an attack, but avoids worse harm with the help of a young hitchhiker. He suspects it was an act of revenge by Pjontek, a criminal he had sent to prison. The hitchhiker, Olaf, then pitches his tent on the Spiekermann family’s property. Their daughter, Jessica, develops romantic feelings for him, their son, Hendrik, admires him, and Spiekermann’s wife, Elke, also takes a liking to the young man. The inspector, who always keeps control at work, feels increasingly powerless in the face of the anonymous threat. When the local authorities’ investigation makes no swift progress, he begins investigating on his own. As the situation escalates and his family is placed in serious danger, Inspector Spiekermann has to realize that his professional skills are not enough to deal with this personal matter.
