A deadly outbreak on Germany’s North Sea coast leads an environmental agency team into a fight against rapidly evolving organisms.
The story
When beachgoers along Germany’s North Sea coast fall seriously ill, with some deaths, investigators identify swimming in the sea as a likely common factor. Doctor Eva Meinert alerts the Federal Environment Agency, whose investigation is led by Peter Kranz and includes marine biologist Finn. The team soon discovers single-celled organisms that are changing into multicellular life and feeding on petroleum-based substances. The fictional island of Nordrum is considered the outbreak’s source, and officials face the prospect of evacuating it as the pathogen spreads beyond the coast.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Thematically, this disaster film calls to mind Frank Schätzing’s *The Swarm*. Out of the blue, beachgoers on Germany’s North Sea coast fall seriously ill, some fatally. At first, swimming in the sea is identified as the common cause. Doctor Eva Meinert informs the Federal Environment Agency, which investigates under the leadership of neurotic Peter Kranz and his team, including marine biologist Finn. Single-celled organisms are soon located; they mutate into multicellular organisms and feed on petroleum-based substances. It is not only the fictional North Sea island of Nordrum, next to Borkum and considered the source of the outbreak, that must be evacuated. The pathogen also spreads epidemically into groundwater and drinking water. While other players are also up to no good with shady financial dealings, the uncontrollable mercilessness of evolution has struck, creating creatures that could bring humanity to a definitive end. Peter Kranz and his team take up the ruthless fight against the unknown.
