The story

One summer night on the French Riviera, drifter Pierre Menda is picked up on a small road by a woman in a luxurious white convertible. After a brief, unsettling encounter, she orders him out and attempts to run him over before escaping. Pierre writes down the license plate and traces the car to the wealthy Lecain household. There he meets sisters Éva and Hélène, whose strikingly similar looks make it difficult to tell them apart. Éva, the younger sister, uses a wheelchair because her legs are paralyzed. As Pierre becomes entangled with the sisters, uncertainty grows and the mystery surrounding the driver deepens.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

One summer night, Pierre Menda, a man who seems adrift and wanders aimlessly along a small road on the French Riviera, is pulled over by a luxurious white convertible. Without a word, its driver—a woman whose only discernible feature is her long blond hair—invites him in, opens her coat to reveal that she is naked, and gives herself to him. But after he is abruptly told to get out of the car, the driver tries to run him over, then manages to escape. Using the license plate number he had time to write down, Pierre finds the home of the vehicle’s owners, the Lecains. But one surprise follows another: the occupants of the wealthy villa are the sisters Éva and Hélène Lecain, two young women with long blond hair and such similar appearances that they could almost be twins. Éva, the younger sister, gets around in a wheelchair because her legs are paralyzed. Turmoil and doubt creep into Pierre’s mind, as a three-way relationship takes shape and the mystery deepens.
