A midwife’s emergency delivery leads to a police investigation when the newborn is later found injured.
The story
After delivering three babies, midwife Toni Hasler is called to help Fanny Brandstetter, who has gone into labor. With no colleague available and the nearest hospital too far away, Toni delivers the baby himself. A few days later, the newborn is found with broken ribs, and Inspector Hallmoser investigates whether Toni caused the injury and why he handled the delivery. Toni seeks help from his ex-wife Hanna, a prominent lawyer, while the people around him face romantic complications: his friend Franzl is lonely, and Luise asks Toni about donating sperm. As the investigation proceeds, Toni’s account comes under scrutiny.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After delivering three babies, Toni Hasler comes home, where Franzl’s birthday is being celebrated. Before he can enjoy himself, he gets a call from a pregnant woman who has gone into labor. He rushes over, but first tries to find a colleague who can take over. Nobody is available, so he handles the delivery himself. Fanny Brandstetter and Nico Tschauner’s unborn baby is in a breech position, so Toni contacts the dispatch center to find an available delivery room at a hospital. The nearest one is in Rosenheim, much too far away, so he delivers the baby using a medical maneuver. Evi Höllriegl is having problems with menopause and secretly seeks help from Luise Fuchs. Luise advises her to approach it more positively and gives her Chinese drops that are supposed to balance her hormones. Franzl is tired of still being alone, so he signs up for a dating site. As he drives Toni to the clinic, he nearly runs Evi over while backing out. When he helps her up, he is instantly smitten and falls in love with her. But Evi gives him the cold shoulder and rides away on her bicycle. After talking with Evi, Luise suddenly feels that she wants a child too, and asks Toni if he would donate sperm to her. Toni’s intervention during the delivery soon has consequences: a few days later, the newborn is found to have two broken ribs, prompting a police investigation. Inspector Hallmoser is assigned to find out why Toni really delivered the baby himself and whether he is responsible for the child’s injury. Toni turns to his ex-wife Hanna, a prominent lawyer. She agrees to help him, though she will also consider him a potential perpetrator. During Toni’s interview, the inspector doubts his account that he had intended to take Fanny to the hospital. Afterwards, while talking things over with Hanna, he remembers that there had been a camera in the bathroom because a water birth had been planned. They go to Nico and ask whether the camera was recording and whether he would give them the footage. He resists at first, but then agrees. Watching the video proves that Toni was telling the truth. The inspector now wants to know whether he joined in Franzl’s birthday celebration, because his neighbor has reported that he drank alcohol. When Franzl is then summoned as well and claims the opposite, it does not help Toni at all. Luise finds her apartment completely ransacked and initially thinks someone has broken in. But the “burglar” is a raccoon that has injured itself. She gives it first aid and befriends it. Franzl has a blind date at a restaurant, where Evi is also meeting a man. When she sees how old he is, she leaves him there and sits down beside Franzl at the bar. He recognizes her and immediately starts flirting, and they leave together. Toni visits Luise to talk about the sperm donation, but they grow closer and sleep together. The next morning, neither of them knows how to deal with it. Hanna discovers that Nico has been violent in the past and tells the inspector, after secretly speaking with Christl, the Brandstetters’ housekeeper. Fanny has a visitor at home, a stranger who claims to be an ice-cream seller. At that moment, Nico comes home with the baby. The ice-cream seller takes the opportunity to leave a little wooden sheep on the table while no one is watching, which leaves Fanny completely confused. When the baby is crying incessantly again the next morning, she takes it to the hospital, where Dr. Schellinger discovers that another rib is broken. Nico is now definitely a suspect, and the case against Toni is dropped. But Toni does not believe Nico is responsible. Luise has taken the raccoon to Josie’s, and Franzl can no longer find his phone. He has been waiting for a call from Evi. She had previously visited Luise and, despite having had great sex with Franzl, admitted she had reservations about a relationship because he is 15 years younger. At the hospital, Toni sees a strange man—the ice-cream seller—sneaking around Fanny’s baby. When Toni tries to confront him, they struggle and both get injured. They go to Luise to have their injuries treated. She discovers that the man has broken his arm and notices that this has happened before. He openly admits that he has brittle bone disease. Since Luise and Toni now want to know why he sought out Fanny and her baby, they go with him to the Brandstetter farm. There, Fanny’s parents can no longer keep lying. They took her in as a baby from Balu—that is the man’s name—because his wife died during childbirth and he was overwhelmed. They had also been unable to have children of their own. Now that it has been established that the baby also has a mild form of brittle bone disease, Nico’s innocence is proved as well. Franzl finds the raccoon—and his phone—in the attic and sees that Evi tried to call him several times. They meet again at the same restaurant and make up. Luise’s pregnancy test is negative, and she is very sad. Toni asks her what will happen to their relationship now, and they agree to remain friends.
