Full plot (contains spoilers)

Topaze, a moral philosophy teacher at Muche’s boarding school, is as sincere and serious as he is naive. He is secretly in love with Ernestine, the director’s daughter. But when Topaze refuses to raise the grades of the son of a wealthy family, who is a dunce, Mr. Muche fires him, accusing him of having behaved improperly with Mr. Muche’s daughter. Topaze is then hired by Régis de Castel-Bénac, a crooked politician who makes money by rigging public contracts and blackmailing shopkeepers. Reluctantly drawn into shady dealings, Topaze gradually realizes that life in business is very different from his life as a poor teacher who gave the children lessons in morality.
