An unemployed urban planner tries to revive her parents’ ideals through small acts of protest while navigating a complicated family and a hesitant romance.
The story
Angèle, a young urban planner recently laid off by her left-wing bosses, puts her newly freed-up time into campaigning alongside her sculptor friend Léonor. They stage a happening outside a job centre, intervene poetically in a bank and create a discussion group, hoping that small actions can change the world. Angèle clings to the ideals of her former-1968 activist parents, but her family’s paths have diverged: her father lives in the past, her sister has embraced her husband’s ultraliberal outlook, and her mother has left the family to live in the Ardèche. The arrival of Saïd, a charming, eccentric school principal and poet, further complicates matters, as Angèle does not feel ready for romance.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Angèle, a young urban planner recently laid off by her left-wing bosses, who have quietly converted to the market economy, makes the most of her newly freed-up time by campaigning alongside her sculptor friend Léonor. A happening outside a Pôle Emploi job centre, a poetic intervention in a bank, the creation of a discussion group—she tries everything that might, on a small scale, begin to change the world, with her friend’s support. With little to show for it. It has to be said that she is the daughter of a couple of former ’68ers and clings desperately to the family’s ideals. Even though Simon, her father, now lives only in the past. And even though her sister Noutka has renounced her humanist convictions and embraced the ultraliberal ideas of her husband Stéphane, a marketing consultant with no scruples. While Diane, her mother, has abandoned everything—including her family—to go and live in the middle of nowhere in the Ardèche. It’s tough for Angèle. Even the arrival in her life of Saïd, a charmingly eccentric primary-school principal and a tender poet, only makes things more complicated for her, since she doesn’t feel ready for romance. Until one day, during a meal she shares with Saïd and her father, unexpected news upends what little certainty she has left.
