The story

Jeanne Mayer, an engineer whose project to capture plastic from the sea has failed publicly, is depressed and close to personal bankruptcy after investing in it. Her brother Simon urges her to sell their late mother’s apartment in Lisbon. At the airport, Jeanne runs into Jean, a former high-school classmate who is pushy, naive, and formerly depressed; Vitor, a former sweetheart, meets her there and takes her to the apartment. As Jeanne sorts through her mother’s belongings and contacts real-estate agents, memories of their difficult relationship and the collapse of her project weigh on her. Her ironic inner voice accompanies her, appearing in animated sequences.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Jeanne Mayer is an engineer leading an environmental project to capture plastic in an effort to combat marine pollution (the contamination of the marine environment by plastics). The world premiere of her device ends in public failure. Depressed and on the verge of personal bankruptcy after investing financially in the project, she is encouraged by her brother Simon to sell their mother’s apartment in Lisbon; their mother died by suicide a year earlier. Jeanne’s actions are accompanied by an ironic little inner voice, brought to life through animated sequences. When she travels there, she crosses paths at the airport with Jean, a former high-school classmate who is a little pushy, a little naive, somewhat kleptomaniac, and formerly depressed. At Lisbon airport, Vitor, a former sweetheart, meets her and drives her to her mother’s old apartment. Jeanne sorts through her mother’s belongings and contacts real-estate agents, but she is not very efficient. She is haunted by memories of her difficult relationship with her mother, who appears to her several times, and by the failure of her environmental project. She spends time with Jean, who gives shoplifting lessons to his young niece, and with Vitor, who happens to be the niece’s choir teacher. Simon joins them at their mother’s old apartment.
