A struggling actor’s plan for a Paris march against the underrepresentation of Black people brings differing ideas of Black identity into focus.

The story

JP, an unsuccessful actor in his forties, proposes organizing a large march of Black men in Paris to protest the underrepresentation of Black people in society and the media. To build support, he seeks out influential Black figures and activists. Many initially support the idea, but their views of Black identity differ, shaped by personal experiences and African, Caribbean, or mixed-race backgrounds. As JP tries to determine who is “Black enough” to participate, the march’s purpose raises a difficult question of identity and belonging.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

JP, an unsuccessful actor in his forties, comes up with the idea of organizing a large march of Black men in Paris to protest the underrepresentation of Black people in society and the media. To support the project, he tries to meet influential figures in the Black community, such as comedians Fary and Éric Judor, rappers Soprano and JoeyStarr, and former footballer Vikash Dhorasoo, as well as activists such as the Brigade against anti-Black racism. He soon realizes that many Black people, although they initially support his idea, have very different conceptions of their Black identity, shaped in particular by their personal experiences and their African, Caribbean, or mixed-race backgrounds. It becomes difficult to define what it means to be Black and who is “Black enough” to take part in the march. He also gradually discovers that Fary supports him only out of self-interest, in order to repair his reputation after a controversy. Afro-feminists ask him to open the march to Black women, while people of North African descent and Jews want to join it. He also makes numerous blunders that alienate some of his supporters. Meanwhile, he continues auditioning in the hope of getting his acting career off the ground, but is always offered highly stereotypical roles. Fary eventually offers him the lead role in a film he plans to direct. In the end, the march draws only a small number of participants, but brings JP closer to his father.
