Toys must navigate the challenges of remaining relevant in an era of high-tech gadgets.

The story

Set two years after the fourth film, the story follows Jessie as she, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the other toys deal with the presence of Lilypad, a frog-themed tablet and the new favorite plaything of Bonnie. As Bonnie becomes increasingly attached to the device and begins to neglect her traditional toys, the group must find ways to maintain their connection to their owner. The narrative explores the tension between traditional play and the rise of modern technology, as the toys struggle to remain relevant in a world where screen time is becoming the primary form of entertainment for children.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After a high-tech shipment of Buzz Lightyear toys is shipwrecked on a deserted island, the units escape and head toward 'Star Command'. Meanwhile, Bonnie receives a tablet named Lilypad, becoming obsessed with it and neglecting her toys. Jessie, the toys' leader, tries to convince Lilypad of Bonnie's need for real friends, but the device responds by engaging with Bonnie's peers on social media. Fearing for their status, Jessie seeks advice from Woody, who has left to help Bo Peep. During a sleepover, Jessie and Bullseye are separated from Bonnie and end up in the hands of an elderly couple before being returned to their original owner's home. There, Jessie meets other forgotten toys and a new girl, Blaze. Woody reunites with the group, and they attempt to convince Bonnie that they are still relevant. However, Lilypad tricks Bonnie's father into storing the toys. In a desperate move, Jessie and the others try to reach Bonnie through social media. After a series of mishaps and a realization of their lasting impact on their previous owner, the toys eventually manage to convince Lilypad to help Bonnie befriend Blaze. The film ends with Bonnie and Blaze bonding over their shared love of toys, while the Buzz units are adopted by children at a playground.
