Full plot (contains spoilers)
German fashion designer Rüdiger Kaienberg and Italian Countess Vera da Vinci meet after a car accident. She is injured, and Kaienberg visits her at her bedside. The attractive couturier quickly falls in love with the fiery southern Italian. Once the renowned plastic surgeon Professor Visconti has smoothed away the last traces of the accident from her face, the two plan to marry. The scar is gone, and there would seem to be nothing standing in the way of their wedding. However, Wolfram Dernbach, Rüdiger’s business partner, investigates Vera’s aristocratic lineage on his own and uncovers a dark secret in the da Vinci family history: Vera and Rüdiger were supposedly born to one and the same woman, which would make their marriage incest. This discovery is heart-wrenching for the two lovers, and the tears named in the title are shed in Florence.
