Full plot (contains spoilers)
At his brother Alex’s urging, Emil works as an extra in the summer of 1961 at the prestigious DEFA Studio Babelsberg. During the filming of an opulent pirate adventure, a German-French co-production, he falls head over heels for Milou, a French dance double. They seem made for each other and spend a romantic time getting to know one another. But when construction of the Berlin Wall begins on August 13, 1961, and the borders are closed, they are separated. Milou returns to Paris, while Emil is initially left depressed in Potsdam-Babelsberg, until he hatches a daring plan to see her again. He poses as production manager Karl Boborkmann, writes a screenplay behind the managing director’s back, and produces a film. Milou returns from France to East Germany for the film and its lead role, “Cleopatra.” Surprisingly, however, she is in a relationship with her co-star Omar. After a tumultuous shoot, the film becomes a great success, and Milou chooses Emil.
