Alex Maupain, an accountant, and Béatrice, a taxi driver, are an unremarkable couple. One evening, Alex watches three police officers conduct an identity check. Despite their insistent requests that he leave, he stays because he wants to understand.

Alex Maupain (Gilbert Melki), an accountant, and Béatrice (Sandrine Kiberlain), a taxi driver, are an unremarkable couple. But one evening, Alex watches three police officers conduct an identity check and refuses to leave the scene despite their insistent requests: he wants to “try to understand.” An inexorable, absurd chain of events then gets underway: he finds himself at the police station, hospitalized in a psychiatric clinic at the request of a third party, and then unemployed.
