François Combe (Maurice Ronet), a Parisian star, owes his success to his wife, Yolande (Geneviève Page). She falls for a young actor and asks for a divorce. With no future prospects, François leaves for the United States to work in television. He ends up in Greenwich Village, where he meets Kay (Annie Girardot).
