Queen Poppy must unite various troll tribes to stop a hard rock queen from forcing everyone to join her music.
The story
Two years after the events of the first film, Queen Poppy receives a letter from Queen Barb of the Hard Rock Trolls, inviting her to bring her 'string' to unite the trolls. Poppy's father, King Peppy, explains that there were once six magical lyre strings representing major music tribes that were separated after arguments. While King Peppy and Branch are skeptical, Poppy decides to sneak out with the Pop string to prove Barb is different. Accompanied by Branch and Biggie, Poppy embarks on a journey to find the other tribes, only to discover Barb's plan to forcefully unite all trolls under rock music.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the Techno Reef, King Trollex's tribe is attacked by Queen Barb and her Hard Rock Trolls, who demand his 'string'. In Pop Village, Queen Poppy receives an invitation from Barb to unite the trolls. King Peppy reveals that six magical lyre strings representing music genres (Techno, Funk, Classical, Country, Hard Rock, and Pop) were separated long ago. Poppy, accompanied by Branch and Biggie, sets off to find the other tribes. They visit the ruins of Symphonyville, meet a sentient flute named Pennywhistle, and travel to Lonesome Flats to warn the Country Trolls. After being rescued by Hickory, a Yodeling Troll disguised as a Country Troll, they head to Vibe City to warn the Funk Trolls. There, they reunite with Cooper, the long-lost son of the Funk Trolls. Barb's forces attack, and the group is separated. Branch is captured by Reggaeton and K-Pop Trolls, while Poppy is captured by Barb. At Volcano Rock City, Barb uses the strings to turn captives into Rock Zombies. Poppy, having blocked out the music with gumdrops, smashes Barb's guitar, destroying the strings and turning the trolls gray. Cooper and Prince D lead the trolls in creating a new rhythm, and Poppy leads everyone in singing from their hearts, restoring their music and colors. Barb accepts Poppy's friendship, and the tribes celebrate their harmony.
