A kidnapped medical student trapped in a car trunk turns her phone, medical knowledge, and whatever she can find into tools for survival.

The story

Twenty-eight-year-old medical student Malina Voss is kidnapped and locked in a car trunk, with only fragments of memory about what happened. She uses her smartphone to contact her sister and an emergency operator, while videos on her digital camera help her piece together the events preceding the abduction: she and her boyfriend Enno were hitchhiking toward Frankfurt Airport to fly to South America. Malina has little information about her captor or location, and a serious wound makes escape even more urgent. As she tries to communicate with the outside world and work out why she has been taken, she must find ways to survive inside the moving car.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Twenty-eight-year-old Malina Voss is lying in the trunk of a car and still sees a man approaching her with a pistol. Then the trunk lid is shut and the car drives off. The young woman has been kidnapped, but she does not know where she is and initially cannot remember what happened before. She uses her smartphone to stay in contact with the outside world. She calls her sister Mone, who does not take her seriously and only sends her instructions on how to escape from a car trunk. On her digital camera, Malina watches videos of herself camping with her boyfriend, Enno. The kidnapping began while they were hitchhiking to Frankfurt Airport, from where they were planning to fly to South America. She speaks to police officer Elisa Kühne through the emergency number, but cannot give her much information about the car or their location. Her father, Wolfgang, tells her that a ransom of 250,000 euros has been demanded. Malina sends him a photo of the kidnapper, which she took from one of her videos, but he refuses to speak to the police out of fear. Using a broken side mirror lying in the trunk, Malina discovers a large wound on her hip. She draws on her experience as a medical student to stitch the wound up as best she can with a shoelace. As she does, she calms herself as if she were a patient. She hears the kidnapper talking about a kidney and 4:30, and tells Elisa she suspects organ trafficking. She takes the conversation with the police officer onto a personal level and grows impatient. When the car stops at a gas station, Malina tries to scream for help. But the kidnapper opens the trunk and tells her to be quiet. Before the car drives off again, Malina manages to throw out a bottle containing the kidnapper’s DNA. Then she sees a message from Enno: “They’re watching me.” Elisa tells her that her father thinks he saw the kidnapper at the hospital two weeks ago, but still does not want to pay the ransom. The kidnapping may be connected to the death of a girl from the Gabriel family, after Malina made a mistake during her second emergency operation. Wolfgang Voss believes the girl died of kidney failure as a result. Malina talks to Elisa about Enno and Rainbow Mountain, but when the police officer mentions roadblocks, Malina panics. Afterward, she finds a car jack under the trunk. Using its rod, she smashes the car’s taillight and gets the attention of a driver behind them. But the kidnapper runs the man over and speeds away in the wrong direction on the road. Malina then notices on her phone that they are in the Czech Republic. With a shard from the broken mirror, she sees the license plate and writes it down in blood. She gets Enno on the phone and learns that he is also in the car. Elisa reports that the ransom has been paid and says that an intervention is imminent. Wolfgang says he no longer suspects the Gabriels, but admits that he had already paid the family money once so they would drop their lawsuit against Malina. From her video and the phone number from which the ransom demand came, Malina realizes in shock that Enno is involved. At that moment, the car boards a ferry. Enno confesses over the phone that he is in debt and has been involved in shady deals, including selling medication from the hospital. He then decided to demand the ransom, but denies knowing anything about the kidney. Malina offers him access to her father’s trust fund. To put pressure on him, she pretends to be pregnant by sending him an ultrasound image of her sister. Enno then overpowers the driver and brings the car to a stop on the road. But when he appears at the trunk, the driver shoots him from behind and throws his body in with Malina. Malina records a video message for her family. Then she throws the car jack’s rod between the wheels, sending the car off the road. The car sinks into the water. As the police arrive, Malina manages to escape over the back seat, past the dead driver, and surfaces.
