A fourteen-year-old girl's online friendship with a man posing as a teenager leads to a devastating real-world encounter.
The story
Fourteen-year-old Annie Cameron is gifted a laptop for her birthday and begins communicating online with a boy named Charlie. Although Charlie initially claims to be sixteen, he eventually admits to being older, and Annie begins to believe they are in love. After two months of electronic communication, Charlie invites Annie to meet him at a local mall. Upon arrival, Annie is horrified to discover that Charlie is actually a man in his late thirties. Despite her distress, Charlie convinces her to go to a motel, where he proceeds to assault her and film the ordeal.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After being raped by Charlie, Annie is confused and upset when he stops responding to her messages. Her best friend, Brittany, confronts her about the meeting at the mall, leading Annie to confess the encounter. Brittany alerts the school administration, and police take Annie for questioning. Annie's parents, Will and Lynn, learn of the assault, prompting an investigation by FBI agent Doug Tate. The FBI attempts to have Annie call Charlie, but he blocks her number. Will hires a private investigation firm, but they are unable to locate Charlie as he masks his IP address to appear as the Czech Republic. Will becomes obsessed with the search, causing strain on his family and leading to nightmares about Annie's assault. Annie begins seeing a counselor, Gail Friedman, to whom she confesses her feelings for Charlie. DNA evidence eventually proves Charlie has abused several other girls. After seeing photos of other victims, Annie admits to Friedman that she was raped. Annie later attempts suicide by overdosing on pills after being bullied online, but is saved by her father. The film ends with Annie and Will reconciling, while a post-credits scene reveals Charlie is actually a high school physics teacher named Graham Weston.
